Rustam Kurmaev focuses on representing financial companies and corporations in litigations and on corporate legislation and land issues. Rustam has extensive experience of representing both Russian and foreign clients in arbitration and general jurisdiction courts. He has taken part in many disputes in the spheres of insurance, banking and finances, disputes involving real estate rights and land issues, as well as other disputes under civil and commercial law.

Rustam has been actively involved in major due diligence projects for Russian and foreign companies.

The Legal 500 EMEA 2010  mentions Rustam Kurmaev as a recommended dispute resolution practitioner in Russia and for international arbitration “demonstrating an especially deep knowledge”.

Some recent projects conducted under the guidance of Rustam Kurmaev:

• Winning the case for Stockmann Russia in St.Petersburg Arbitration Court against a third party in relation to constructual claims to change the building after state registration, with possible significant costs.
• Acting for VOLKSWAGEN Group Rus in a series of disputes over termination of dealership agreements, debt recovery and seizure of over 350 luxury vehicles.
• Successfully defended Europe’s leading home improvement retailer in a long-standing USD 13 million dispute in connection with construction of a shopping centre in Volgograd.
• Represented Brunswick Rail Leasing in its dispute with Mechel over the termination of a wagon lease agreement and recovery of USD 21 million debt.
• Successfully represented Panasonic Russia in its dispute against its former landlord who had illegally detained the client’s property after the lease contract had been terminated.
• Successfully handled over 40 disputes for Caterpillar Financial, worth millions of US dollars in aggregate, relating to recovery of leased out vehicles. The cases were complicated by a need to manage lawsuits and enforcement proceedings in dozens of Russian courts located in different regions, from Kaliningrad to Sakhalin.
• Successfully represented Scania in connection with 2 litigations against its former dealer for recovery of a substantial debt deriving from supply contracts.
• Acting for Matra Petroleum in a series of corporate disputes over rights to stakes in a Russian oil-extraction company.
• Representing Vimpelcom in a corporate dispute challenging acquisition of non-residential premises in Novosibirsk.
• Acted for Gillette in a series of disputes for recovery of the cost of freight lost in transportation from China to the UK.
• Acted for Swedwood (IKEA) in litigations over a contractor’s inappropriate performance under a contractor agreement to build a plant and collection of money under the bank guarantee issued to secure return of a prepayment.
• Defended Citibank in its dispute with Schindler over claims under a bank guarantee issued to secure return of prepayment for construction and erection work.

Rustam has been a member of the Moscow Chamber of Attorneys since 2003.
